The Canvas Club brings together ten artists from Surrey to share their work in a relaxed, welcoming setting at The Horton Arts Centre in Epsom. Discover colour, texture, and story across paintings and mixed-media pieces.

Our exhibition features oils, acrylics, watercolours, and mixed media works that celebrate both local landscapes and contemporary artistic expression. Each piece tells a unique story, reflecting the diverse voices of our artistic community.

Meet The Artists

Melanie Cambridge's artwork

Melanie Cambridge

Surrey-based landscape and seascape artist working mainly in oils and gouache, capturing wide skies, coastal light, and atmospheric moods. Author of four instructional art books and creator of his own brush and gouache range. Leads workshops and painting holidays across the UK. Represented at The Wey Gallery in Godalming, Purley-based studio open by appointment.

Maggie Penton's artwork

Maggie Penton

Maggie Penton is an experimental artist and printmaker whose work melds drawing, painting, and collagraph techniques into richly textured pieces inspired by the natural world. Active at Oaks Park Printmakers in Carshalton, Maggie not only creates art but also shares his skills through collagraph and monoprinting workshops, where he encourages playful, hands-on exploration. She regularly exhibits at venues including Denbies Vineyard and the Landmark Arts Centre, with her practice extending across collagraphs, monoprints, and screenprinting. Her workshops at Oaks Park foster curiosity and creativity, inviting participants to discover the expressive potential of printmaking in a relaxed, supportive setting.

Simon Robin Stephens' artwork

Simon Robin Stephens

Sutton-based watercolour artist creating soulful, story-rich paintings inspired to inner sanctuaries imagined in childhood to cope with undiagnosed ADHD. His expressive works — often described as "portals of resilience" — blend lyrical colour, emotional honesty, and a sense of dreamlike calm. Simon exhibits widely across Surrey and South London and sells originals, prints, and gifts through his online shop. His current collection *Sanctuaries of the Mind* explores healing, imagination, and transformation through watercolour.

Simon Bailey

South London-based landscape painter, known for vibrant oil paintings of skies, woodlands, and atmospheric clouds. His music-informed, dyslexia-informed creative process pours energy and emotion into every piece. Originals available online (approx. £500–£2,250); exhibits across Surrey.

David Sprot's artwork

David Sprot

Self-taught contemporary expressionist working primarily in acrylics. Known for colourful, emotionally resonant landscapes and seascapes—often featured with Surrey Contemporaries and exhibited at Denbies Vineyard near Dorking. Awarded Artist of the Month by Guildford Arts Society in September 2020.

Jeanne Threlkeld's artwork

Jeanne Threlkeld

Paints a variety of subjects using oils and other media. Enjoys experimenting with texture and palette knife painting.

Alan Stoney's artwork

Alan Stoney

Wildlife artist based in Surrey; his realistic paintings depict birds and animals through expressive brushwork. Active member of local nature and birding groups, working in acrylic, watercolour, and oils.

Iris Stroud's artwork

Iris Stroud

Based in Woking, paints various subjects - seascapes, landscapes, and portraits - predominantly oils but also uses other mediums.

Fiona Champion's artwork

Fiona Champion

Wildlife-focused impressionist painter using acrylic, pastel, and graphite; celebrates the beauty and character of animals through expressive, naturalistic techniques that capture both movement and personality.

Jane V Bailey's artwork

Jane V Bailey
